Overheard a Tenant in the coffee shop

Overheard a Tenant's phone call at the coffee shop today:

"Oh, not much.  Doing a few chores around the house."

* hears snarky voice on other end *

"Nah, it's cool.  My Landlord discounts rent when I help out!"

Hmm...

Appreciate the team spirit, bud.

But it's not smart.

At least for your Landlord...

Now don't get us wrong:

There's nothing wrong with a Tenant doing work.

Many have skills worthy of an HGTV show.

The problem is when you discount rent.

What's the harm?

You may now be an employer.

You may need to report it to the IRS.

So for Pete's sake, don't discount rent when a Tenant helps you out.

You pay them.

They pay you.

Everyone wins.
