Finally, a bill that says: squatters, GTFO
May 22, 2025Illinois may get this right for a change.
There's a Bill on the table.
It passed both houses.
And should become law.
Meet SB 1563.
It says that if someone’s criminally trespassing in your rental, then cops can bounce them.
No more, “Sorry, this is a civil matter” while the dude who broke in is using your Wi-Fi and trying on your old tenant’s bathrobe.
This matters because squatters love the gray area.
Fake leases.
No rent.
And somehow you're the one on trial.
If this Bill becomes law:
Cops can arrest squatters.
No waiting on a court date.
No pretending this is “just a landlord issue.”
It’s trespass. It’s criminal. And cops can act.

That's issue #154 of The Brief.
This ain't law yet. Until then, keep your leases tight, doors locked, and lawyer on speedial.
