Cops, lawyers and cocky Landlords

Rumor has it some Landlords take this approach:

"I don't deal with cops.  I don't deal with lawyers.  If a Tenant doesn't pay rent, the locks get changed."

Hold on there, Ace.  It ain't that easy.

You don't need a fancy law degree to know this 'policy' is dumber than golfing in a lightning storm. 

Tenants can stay in the property until the Landlord ends the tenancy.

Changing the locks before then is a big no-no.

That's (usually) a self-help eviction.  And illegal.

Changing locks is like holding a stick of dynamite. 

Use with caution.

If not, you'll be dealing with both cops and lawyers.
